Statement on Webber Academy Appeal

Regardless of where you go to school, we believe that kids should be allowed to be themselves.

So when kids aren’t allowed to pray in school, we disagree in the strongest of terms.

That’s what happened in the case of Webber Academy, where two Muslim students were forced to pray outside in the snow by the school. These very brave students took the school to the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

We disagree with the Alberta Court of Appeal’s decision on Friday that reversed the decisions of the Alberta Human Rights Commission and the Court of Queen’s Bench.

The decision is an important one that affects religious minorities who seek reasonable accommodation in meeting their sincerely held beliefs.

We will continue to support the rights of students to be themselves.
